The All Progressives Congress has overturned its zoning arrangement for the 2027 Abia State governorship race, scrapping a directive that had earlier restricted the ticket to a specific senatorial district and effectively reopening the contest to all qualified aspirants across the state.
The decision, announced by the party’s national leadership and confirmed by the Abia State chapter on Friday, represents a sharp reversal of an earlier position taken barely 24 hours before, when the state working committee zoned the governorship ticket to Abia Central Senatorial District.
A swift reversal from the party headquarters
The latest directive, communicated through the Abia APC Publicity Secretary, Hon. Uche Aguoru, ordered the complete jettisoning of all zoning arrangements previously issued at the state level. According to the statement, the party will now “maintain the status quo,” effectively restoring an open contest.
“By this directive, all aspirants interested in contesting for any position… are hereby advised that they are free to approach the party and purchase their nomination forms,” the statement said.
The implication is significant: every elective position — from the House of Assembly to the Senate and governorship — is now open to contenders from any part of Abia State under the party’s platform.
Internal pressure and behind-the-scenes lobbying
Party insiders say the reversal followed a wave of petitions and objections from stakeholders within the Abia APC structure, many of whom argued that the zoning formula had been imposed without broad consensus.
While the national leadership did not publicly name those behind the complaints, the intervention suggests mounting internal disagreement over how power should be distributed ahead of the 2027 elections.
The party leadership reportedly reviewed the objections before concluding that the zoning arrangement risked deepening factional tensions rather than resolving them.
From “equity” to open competition
The original zoning decision had been defended by the state chapter as a move to promote equity and balance among Abia’s senatorial zones. It was also intended to streamline aspirants ahead of the primaries.
However, the national leadership’s cancellation has now reset the political equation, shifting the contest from a regionally structured race to a fully open field.
This kind of reversal is not new in Nigeria’s party politics, where zoning arrangements often serve as temporary consensus tools rather than binding rules. But it also reflects the persistent tension between state chapters and national leaderships over control of candidate selection.
What this means for Abia politics
Abia State has historically seen intense competition among its senatorial zones for political representation, particularly in governorship contests. Zoning is often used to manage these competing interests and prevent post-election grievances.
With the APC now removing that structure, the 2027 governorship race is expected to become more competitive — and potentially more divisive — within the party. Aspirants who had previously been excluded by zoning calculations may now enter the race, reshaping alliances and funding dynamics ahead of the primaries.
For voters, the decision may broaden choice within the APC, but it also raises questions about internal cohesion and whether the party can manage emerging rivalries without fracturing its state structure.
What happens next
The party has directed all interested aspirants to proceed with obtaining nomination forms before the deadline set by its national secretariat. This signals an immediate opening of the field ahead of internal primaries.
Attention will now shift to how the Abia APC manages the influx of contenders and whether the reversal will trigger further disputes between state and national structures.
With 2027 still years away, the decision nonetheless sets the tone early for what is likely to be a highly contested and strategically fluid governorship race in Abia State.
