The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has officially commissioned the Utako Farmer’s Market in Abuja, marking a significant step in boosting commercial infrastructure and economic growth in the capital.
The Guardian reports that the market, developed on 3,000 square meters of land, features: 50 lock-up shops, 40 informal stalls and 7 warehouses.
Speaking at the event on Friday, Wike—represented by the Minister of State for FCT, Dr. Mariya Mahmoud—stressed that this initiative demonstrates the Tinubu administration’s commitment to economic expansion and improving residents’ quality of life.
Wike praised Ambassador Maureen Tamuno, the Group Managing Director/CEO of Abuja Investments Company Limited (AICL), for her efforts in driving economic growth and fostering strategic investments in the FCT.
“This market is more than just a trading space—it is a hub of economic empowerment, a centre of agricultural excellence, and a direct link between farmers and consumers,” he said.
“It will eliminate middlemen, reduce post-harvest losses, and boost rural incomes.”
He also highlighted that the public-private collaboration behind the project aligns with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
In her remarks, Amb. Maureen Tamuno noted that the market aligns with Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 11, which focuses on sustainable urban growth, economic development, and environmental conservation.
“Despite the high capital costs of renewable energy, AICL embarked on this project to integrate sustainability and eco-friendly practices, ensuring long-term benefits for farmers, traders, and FCT residents,” she said.
The project is also expected to support the food security policy of the Tinubu administration by ensuring farm produce reaches consumers efficiently.
The Chairman, Senate Committee on FCT and Ancillary Matters, Sen. David Jimkuta, and the Head of Service (HoS) of the FCT, Grace Adayilo, both commended the efforts of the FCT ministers and Amb. Tamuno in promoting economic development in Abuja.
The commissioning of the Utako Farmer’s Market is expected to enhance agricultural trade, empower local farmers, and improve food supply chains in the Federal Capital Territory.
