The Supreme Court of Nigeria has removed Julius Abure as the National Chairman of the Labour Party (LP) in a significant ruling delivered on Friday.
A five-member panel of the apex court delivered a unanimous judgment, nullifying an earlier ruling by the Court of Appeal in Abuja, which had affirmed Abure’s position as the party’s national chairman.
The court ruled that the Court of Appeal lacked the jurisdiction to entertain the matter, stating that the substance of the case pertained to internal party leadership, which is beyond the reach of judicial intervention.
“All matters relating to party leadership are internal affairs of the party, over which the judiciary has no jurisdiction,” the court stated.
With this ruling, the apex court has reaffirmed the principle that internal party disputes—particularly those concerning leadership—are not justiciable unless they clearly violate the provisions of electoral laws or the Nigerian Constitution.
