A wave of disinformation on social media is fueling admiration among some Nigerians for Burkina Faso’s military ruler, Captain Ibrahim Traore, portraying him as a heroic reformer challenging Western influence.
Despite never visiting Burkina Faso, Nigerians like Lagos auto technician Kehinde Sanni praise Traore’s leadership, influenced by viral but misleading content online. These portrayals frame him as a strong, defiant leader restoring national dignity — despite credible reports of authoritarianism and worsening security at home.
Traore came to power via a coup in September 2022 amid rising anti-French sentiment in West Africa. Alongside Mali and Niger, his junta has aligned with Moscow and formed the Alliance of Sahel States. Experts warn that Russian-linked propaganda campaigns, including through social media influencers, are behind much of the false content bolstering his image.
“Nigeria needs someone like Traore,” many say, especially as the country faces economic hardship. But analysts caution that glorifying military rule undermines Nigeria’s democratic values.
According to the 2025 Global Terrorism Index, Burkina Faso remains the world’s most terrorism-affected country. Journalists and dissenters are often silenced or detained under Traore’s rule. Still, false narratives continue to gain traction, raising concerns about regional stability and ideological influence.
