Peter Obi, the 2023 Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate, has shown public support for Qudir Yusuf Alabi, the young boy who famously stood in front of Obi’s campaign convoy during the 2023 election season. Obi’s delegation recently visited Alabi at the Kirikiri Medium Correctional Centre in Apapa, Lagos.
The visit was confirmed by Yunusa Tanko, Interim National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement Worldwide, who shared updates via his official 𝕏 (formerly Twitter) handle.
“His Excellency, Mr. Peter Obi, through the Obidient Movement, visited Qudir Yusuf Alabi… connecting with his mother and sister, and showing unwavering support during this difficult time,” the statement read.
Background: From Viral Moment to Legal Trouble
Yusuf Alabi went viral during the 2023 elections for standing bravely in front of Peter Obi’s convoy, a symbolic moment that captured hearts nationwide. However, his story took a tragic turn.
Reports indicate that Yusuf was arrested in his neighborhood, allegedly accused of theft and street fighting. Eyewitnesses and supporters have dismissed the claims as false and politically motivated, sparking public outcry.
In response, Peter Obi personally requested human rights lawyer Inibehe Effiong to take up the case and ensure Yusuf receives proper legal support.
Obi Condemns Injustice
Obi had earlier appealed to law enforcement to uphold justice and operate within the bounds of the law.
“The police and other agents of government must stop weaponizing citizens and act according to due process,” Obi wrote on 𝕏 on April 8, 2025.
Solidarity and Support
Obi’s visit to the prison and his direct engagement with Yusuf’s family underscores a broader message — that the Obidient Movement stands for justice, compassion, and accountability.
As Yusuf’s case gains traction, many Nigerians are calling for his immediate release and demanding transparency in how the matter is being handled.
