NAF Publishes Shortlist for 2026 Basic Military Training, Warns Candidates Against Recruitment Scams

The Nigerian Air Force has released the names of candidates shortlisted for its Basic Military Training Course (BMTC) 46/2025, marking the transition from initial aptitude screening to the more rigorous selection phase that ultimately determines entry into one of the country’s most competitive security institutions.

In a statement issued on April 15, the service’s Director of Public Relations and Information, Ehimen Ejodame, said the list comprises applicants who passed the Zonal General Aptitude Test conducted across 15 Air Force bases nationwide in December 2025.

Those shortlisted are now invited to attend the Selection Board Interview, scheduled to hold at the Nigerian Air Force Base in Kaduna from April 27 to June 13, 2026. The interview stage will assess candidates for enlistment as both trades and non-trades personnel.

Transition to a decisive phase

The Selection Board Interview represents a critical filtering stage in military recruitment, combining physical screening, medical checks, credential verification, and character assessment. Historically, a significant number of candidates are dropped at this stage, even after passing the aptitude test.

According to Ejodame, candidates must report strictly according to the batch schedule published on the official recruitment portal. Failure to appear on the assigned date will result in automatic disqualification — a rule the Air Force says is meant to enforce discipline and streamline the process.

Renewed warning over recruitment fraud

Beyond the announcement, the Air Force’s emphasis on a zero-cost recruitment process reflects a persistent problem in Nigeria’s military enlistment cycles: fraud.

Ejodame reiterated that the entire process is free and warned candidates not to make payments to individuals or groups claiming to influence recruitment outcomes. This caution is not routine bureaucracy — it is a response to years of documented cases where desperate applicants have been defrauded by intermediaries posing as military insiders.

For many young Nigerians facing limited employment opportunities, military recruitment exercises attract tens of thousands of applicants, creating fertile ground for exploitation.

Why this matters now

The release of the shortlist comes at a time when Nigeria’s armed forces are under sustained pressure from multiple security threats, including insurgency in the North-East, banditry in the North-West, and emerging security concerns in parts of the North-Central region.

For ordinary citizens, the stakes go beyond recruitment. The quality, discipline, and readiness of new entrants into the Air Force directly affect the military’s operational effectiveness — from aerial surveillance to counterinsurgency support.

At the same time, the recruitment process serves as a rare formal employment pathway for young Nigerians, particularly those without access to white-collar opportunities. Transparency in the process, therefore, carries both security and socio-economic implications.

What is confirmed — and what is not

The Air Force has confirmed the release of shortlisted names and the schedule for the selection interview in Kaduna. However, it has not disclosed the total number of applicants, the number shortlisted, or the final intake target for BMTC 46/2025.

There is also no public breakdown of regional representation or gender balance at this stage — details that often become points of public scrutiny in federal recruitment exercises.

What candidates should expect next

Candidates who successfully pass the Selection Board Interview will proceed to formal enlistment and begin basic military training, where they will undergo months of physical conditioning, drills, and foundational military education.

For now, attention is on Kaduna, where the next phase will test not just academic aptitude but endurance, discipline, and suitability for military life.

The coming weeks will reveal not only who makes the final cut, but also whether the Air Force can sustain public confidence in a recruitment process long shadowed by allegations of irregularities.
