The Super Eagles of Nigeria are set to host Zimbabwe’s Warriors today at 5 pm local time at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo for a crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier.
Nigeria aims to build on their recent 2-0 victory over Rwanda in Kigali, which revitalized their qualification hopes after a winless start in the opening four games. Zimbabwe, currently at the bottom of Group C with three points, displayed resilience by coming back from two goals down to secure a vital point against Benin Republic in their previous match.
Group C remains open, with South Africa leading with 10 points from five games. Bafana Bafana will face Gernot Rohr’s Benin Republic next at the Félix Houphouet-Boigny Stadium in Abidjan, the adopted home of the Cheetahs.
In the lead-up to today’s match, Zimbabwe’s captain expressed confidence in his team’s ability to challenge Nigeria.
He acknowledged Nigeria’s status but emphasized that the Super Eagles are vulnerable and beatable in Uyo. He stated, “Like us, Nigeria have their back against the wall. They are like wounded lions, eager to turn the page after a poor start to the qualifiers. It will be an exciting game, and Nigeria are beatable in Uyo.”
Historically, Nigeria has dominated their encounters with Zimbabwe, remaining unbeaten in their last seven meetings. The Super Eagles have recorded four wins and three draws, with Zimbabwe’s only victory over Nigeria occurring in a 2-0 friendly match back in 1981.
