The Federal Government has launched an investigation into the security breach at the Koton Karfe Medium Security Custodial Centre (MSCC) in Kogi State, which resulted in the escape of 12 awaiting trial inmates (ATI) early Monday morning.
Five Escapees Recaptured, Seven Still at Large
The spokesperson for the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), Abubakar Umar, confirmed that five of the escaped inmates have been recaptured and returned to custody, while seven remain at large.
He assured that all necessary search mechanisms, including security agencies and local vigilantes, have been deployed to track down the remaining fugitives.
“A search party has been deployed to all exit and entry routes in Kogi State. The team consists of all security agencies, including local vigilantes, to ensure the escapees are recaptured,” Umar stated.
Tragic Incident: Officer Killed During Breakout
The breach led to the killing of a correctional officer on duty, further heightening concerns over security lapses at the facility.
Minister Orders Immediate Investigation
In response, the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has ordered an urgent investigation into the escape, describing the incident as unfortunate.
He assured Nigerians that the government is fully committed to recapturing all fleeing inmates using advanced biometric systems and other security technologies.
The minister also directed the Acting Controller General of the NCoS, Sylvester Nwakuche, to visit the facility, assess the situation, and conduct a thorough audit to determine the circumstances surrounding the breach.
“We are on top of the situation. Our personnel are on the ground in Kogi, and I have ordered a comprehensive audit of the situation,” Tunji-Ojo affirmed.
Ongoing Search Operations
With multiple security agencies mobilized, authorities remain confident that the remaining escapees will be apprehended soon. The incident has also renewed concerns over prison security and the need for stronger measures to prevent future breaches.
