Residents and business owners in Ibadan are expressing frustration over the worsening power supply from the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC). Many report that electricity has been unreliable in recent days, disrupting daily life and business operations.
Across various areas, including Lagelu and Ibadan North, the complaints are consistent. John Adedapo, a resident of Ibadan North, is considering alternative power sources due to the erratic supply. A senior Oyo State government official residing in Kolapo Isola Estate echoed similar concerns, describing the situation as “terrible.”
Wale Owoade, a Monatan resident, criticized IBEDC for its poor service, revealing that despite living in his home for over two years, his electricity bill has yet to exceed N10,000 due to the lack of supply.
Dr. Oyenike Adeleke, founder of Ibadan Entrepreneur Network, highlighted the impact on businesses, stating that frequent outages and low voltage have damaged many of her appliances. “The power supply is too erratic. Even when restored, it’s often too low to sustain my devices,” she lamented.
In response, IBEDC issued a statement acknowledging residents’ concerns, particularly in Monatan, Kolapo Isola, and Bodija. The company attributed the poor supply to load allocation constraints from the national grid, technical faults, and ongoing infrastructure upgrades.
“We sincerely regret the inconvenience this has caused our esteemed customers. IBEDC remains committed to improving electricity distribution through network maintenance, stakeholder engagement, and deploying additional resources,” the statement read.
Energy expert Prof. Adeola Adenikinju weighed in on the issue, stressing the need for improved infrastructure. “It could be due to pole collapses or aging equipment. There’s an urgent need to enhance the distribution network,” he explained.
As residents and businesses struggle with unreliable power, many hope for swift and effective solutions from IBEDC to ease the disruptions in their daily lives.
