Tragedy struck at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) on Friday, April 25, 2025, when Alex Ogunniyi, a physiotherapist at the facility, was shot dead at close range by suspected cultists.
The shocking attack occurred within the hospital premises, sending patients and staff into panic as they scrambled for safety.
Confirming the incident, UBTH spokesperson Joshua Uwaila stated:
“A physiotherapist with the University of Benin Teaching Hospital was shot dead on Friday.”
In response to the killing, hospital workers staged a protest on Monday, demanding immediate action from security agencies to apprehend the killers and improve safety for health workers within and outside the hospital.
The motive behind the attack remains unclear, and investigations are reportedly underway.
