World Rugby reveals radical plans to speed up sport and broaden its appeal | Rugby union | The Guardian

The British High Commission in Nigeria has reaffirmed its commitment to grassroots sports development by donating rugby kits and balls to the Nigeria Rugby Football Federation (NRFF). The donation was made during a handover ceremony held on Thursday at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja.

The event saw the presence of key stakeholders from the National Sports Commission (NSC), the NRFF, and representatives of the British High Commission.

“A Boost for Youth and Grassroots Rugby” — NSC

Speaking on behalf of the NSC Chairman, Shehu Dikko, the Assistant Director of Coaching, Alhaji Mohammed Maigidasama, expressed heartfelt appreciation for the donation.

“Among over 40 sports federations in the country, your decision to partner with rugby is highly commendable,” Maigidasama said.
“Rest assured, these resources will not be underutilized. We will work hard to make you proud.”

UK Reaffirms Support Through Sports Diplomacy

The Deputy British High Commissioner, Gill Lever, noted that the gesture is part of the UK’s broader mission to strengthen ties with Nigeria through sports diplomacy. She emphasized rugby’s role in promoting values such as integrity, respect, inclusion, and unity.

“In societies that may face ethnic or regional divisions, sports like rugby help foster unity,” Lever said.
“The UK believes in the power of sport to build bridges, and we are proud to support Nigeria in this effort.”

She also expressed optimism about Nigeria’s potential to become a leading force in African rugby.

“There’s no reason Nigeria shouldn’t be among the leading rugby nations in Africa and beyond,” she added.
“Just look at the success of the Super Eagles and Super Falcons—rugby can follow that same trajectory.”

Azeez Ladipo, General Manager of the NRFF, also expressed gratitude, saying the donation would greatly enhance the Federation’s efforts, particularly in grassroots and school-level development programs.
