A night of worship turned into a nightmare on Friday as gunmen stormed a prayer gathering on a remote mountain in the Egbola area along Agbaja Road, Lokoja Local Government Area of Kogi State, abducting several worshippers.
The attack reportedly occurred during a night vigil, with the assailants firing gunshots into the air to create panic and fear before dragging an unspecified number of people into the surrounding bush.
One of the victims, a woman identified as Mary Adams Gure, was rescued following the swift response of the Kogi State vigilante group, who engaged the attackers in a gun duel after receiving an alert.
“The vigilantes were mobilized quickly in response to the attack, and in the process, Gure was rescued. She managed to escape amid the chaos,” a vigilante source confirmed.
The search-and-rescue operation is still ongoing, with security operatives combing the area in a bid to locate and free the remaining abducted worshippers.
As of the time of this report, the State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), ASP William Aya, has not responded to calls or messages regarding the incident.
