In a bold step towards promoting safe and effective skincare in Nigeria, Beiersdorf Nigeria, makers of NIVEA, has officially introduced its premium dermatological brand, Eucerin, to the Nigerian market. The launch comes amid rising concerns over the use of unregulated bleaching products in the country.
Speaking at the launch event held at Marriott Hotel, Lagos, Oladele Adeyole, Country Manager of Beiersdorf Nigeria, emphasized the urgent need for scientifically backed skincare solutions, citing the dangers of harmful bleaching agents.
“About three years ago, NAFDAC raised an alarm on the prevalent issue of bleaching in Nigeria. Beauty is now more than skin deep—it has become a moral and health issue that must be addressed,” Adeyole said.
Eucerin: Backed by Science, Built for Skin of Colour
The event featured a detailed scientific presentation by Prof. Firas Al-Niaimi, a UK-based Consultant Dermatologist and Laser Specialist. He highlighted Thiamidol, the key ingredient in Eucerin’s hyperpigmentation treatment, as the most effective Tyrosinase inhibitor out of more than 50,000 tested compounds.
“This treatment is safer than hydroquinone and does not damage melanocytes. It’s suitable for long-term use—even during pregnancy—and works specifically on problem areas without altering natural skin tone,” Al-Niaimi explained.
A Legacy of Dermatological Excellence
Mathieu Levasseur, Beiersdorf’s General Manager for Central, East and West Africa, expressed excitement about expanding the brand’s footprint in Nigeria.
“Although we’ve been in Nigeria for over a decade with NIVEA, we are proud to introduce Eucerin—a brand backed by over 120 years of medical science.”
Nathalie Gemayel, Regional Medical Manager for Africa and the Middle East, also traced the brand’s origins to 1882 and noted that a Eucerin product is sold every two seconds globally, testifying to its scientific credibility and proven results.
New Products for Nigerian Skin
Four key products were officially launched:
- Even Pigment Perfector Dual Serum
- Even Pigment Perfector Day & Night Cream
- Dermopurifyer Triple Effect Serum for Acne
- Sun Protection Range (Oil Control Sun Gel Cream, Pigment Control Sun Fluid, Photo-Aging Sun Fluid)
These products were praised by early users in Nigeria who shared testimonies of noticeable skin improvements over the past year.
Expert Panel Applauds Efficacy and Safety
A panel of leading Nigerian dermatologists, including Prof. Ayesha Akinkugbe, Dr. Cynthia Ebie, and Dr. Omatighene Enovo Obaro, discussed Eucerin’s application, dosage, and affordability. They praised Thiamidol’s safety and effectiveness, particularly for patients with Skin of Colour.
Adeyole called on Nigerians to shift away from harmful practices and embrace science-driven skincare, noting the brand’s mission to provide not just beauty, but health and confidence backed by years of research.
Notable attendees included Prof. Dasetima Altraide, President of the Nigerian Association of Dermatologists (NAD), top dermatologists from across the country, pharmacists, skincare professionals, and beauty industry stakeholders.
