The Ogun State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of one Jeremiah Nwoke, who attempted to cart away the Agemo statue located at Itoro junction, Ijebu Ode, on Saturday. The suspect reportedly desecrated the revered cultural symbol and severed its crown, prompting swift intervention by security operatives.
According to a statement from the Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Omolola Odutola, the suspect is currently being held at the Obalende Police Station, where the crown has also been recovered. He is now undergoing mental health evaluation as part of the investigation.
“The prompt response by the police helped calm tensions at the scene and prevented what could have become a violent confrontation with traditional worshippers,” Odutola noted.
Despite the sensitivity of the act, the police assured residents that Ijebu Ode remains calm and security has been reinforced to maintain peace in the area.
“Members of the public are assured of their safety as investigation into the incident continues,” Odutola added.
The Agemo statue is a significant cultural and spiritual symbol for the Ijebu people, and the desecration sparked concerns about cultural preservation and respect for traditional heritage.
