The Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Sokoto State, Alhaji Bello Goronyo, has expressed confidence that the party remains strong enough to reclaim power across Nigeria in the next general elections without merging with any other political group.
Speaking at a PDP stakeholders’ meeting on Saturday in Sokoto, Goronyo declared that the 2023 elections served as a “litmus test” that proved the PDP still holds the trust of many Nigerians.
“We have the capacity to reclaim our mandate. We are the best choice—tested and trusted by Nigerians,” he said.
He cited the current economic hardship, insecurity, and rising cost of living as reasons Nigerians will not allow a repeat of 2023’s outcome in the 2027 elections.
“Under PDP leadership, Nigerians experienced better days—economically, democratically, in terms of security and education,” he noted.
Goronyo compared current economic indicators with those during PDP’s time in power:
-
Current price of rice: N90,000 – N100,000
-
Previous price under PDP: N30,000 – N35,000
-
Current minimum wage: N70,000
-
Previous minimum wage: N30,000
“Given these comparisons and the current petrol prices, we believe the good days are behind us—and only the right choice can bring them back.”
Goronyo emphasized that PDP remains the only surviving party from the five original political parties registered for the 1999 elections, stressing its deep grassroots presence and resilience.
On the governance style of the APC-led administration in Sokoto State, he criticized what he described as “wasteful projects,” including road fencing and the demolition of commercial spaces in the name of urban beautification.
“Sokoto is one of the poorest states in Nigeria. The government should focus on empowering the people instead of destroying their sources of livelihood,” he added.
The PDP chairman called on party members to remain committed, united, and prayerful, urging them to continue working towards safeguarding the nation’s democracy and improving the lives of Nigerians.
