Hon. Joshua Audu Gana, representing Lavun/Mokwa/Edati Federal Constituency, has made it clear to his constituents that he will not steal to carry out projects.
Speaking during a meeting with PDP stakeholders in Mokwa on Tuesday, April 1, Gana responded to criticisms about his performance, stating that some of the expectations placed on him were beyond his office as a legislator.
“I Am Not God”
After several stakeholders, including PDP Local Government Chairman, Suleiman Kupanti, expressed disappointment in his stewardship, Gana hit back:
“I thank God that I am not God. I cannot answer all your prayers. It is only God who will answer all your prayers because the complaints of the people are prayers to God.”
He further explained that public funds do not belong to him, and he will not engage in corrupt practices just to meet expectations:
“The money in public office is not my father’s money; it is not my personal money; it is government money… When no money has been provided by the federal government, you want me to go and steal? My father is not a thief, none of my family members are thieves, and you people will not make me a thief.”
Blames Being in Opposition for Lack of Funds
Gana also suggested that his party affiliation (PDP) might be a reason why funds for constituency projects have not been allocated:
“The party in rulership today is APC, and I am in the opposition. When you compare one legislator in an APC-ruled government to when PDP was in power, then you are a bad examiner.”
Constituents Fire Back
His response did not sit well with some of his constituents, who accused him of excuses and incompetence.
One resident criticized his approach:
“This is not a politician. There is no wisdom in his speech. He is just blowing grammar. Is this how to respond to people as a politician?”
Another added:
“If you can’t continue, leave. Since you are lamenting about not being given money for projects in your constituency, you should step aside. Respect is earned, not bought.”
With the growing dissatisfaction, Gana may face increasing pressure to prove his effectiveness despite the challenges of being in the opposition.
