The National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA) has reassured Nigerians especially those living with HIV that there is no shortage of antiretroviral drugs in the country.
This comes after concerns were raised following a recent World Health Organisation (WHO) press conference. However, NACA confirmed that the Federal Government has taken proactive measures to ensure a steady supply of HIV medication.
Government Steps Up Support
To strengthen the healthcare sector, the government has approved several funding initiatives, including: $1.07 billion for healthcare reforms under the HOPE program, N4.8 billion specifically for HIV treatment, N300 billion recently approved by the Senate for the health sector in the 2025 budget
No Disruptions in Treatment
NACA’s Director-General, Dr. Temitope Ilori, assured Nigerians that despite the temporary pause in aid from the United States government, HIV treatment and prevention services will not be affected.
“There is no shortage of drugs and consumables, and no immediate stop of services for HIV treatment, testing, and prevention in Nigeria,” Ilori said.
She emphasized that treatment centers and pharmacies across the country will continue to have sufficient antiretroviral drugs, ensuring uninterrupted access to care.
While acknowledging Nigeria’s partnership with the US government, Ilori noted that this situation presents an opportunity to strengthen local funding and build a more sustainable HIV response.
NACA’s Commitment to HIV Prevention & Care
NACA reaffirmed its dedication to the fight against HIV/AIDS, promising continued access to quality prevention, treatment, and care services for all Nigerians.
