A nurse in Enugu has been suspended from clinical duties after publicly raising alarm over deteriorating conditions at a government hospital—an action that has ignited a wider debate about whistleblowing, accountability, and the fragile state of Nigeria’s public healthcare system.
The nurse, whose video detailing the lack of electricity, water and oxygen at a hospital in Uwani circulated widely online, confirmed her suspension in a follow-up recording. In the video, she expressed shock at the disciplinary action, insisting her intention was to draw attention to urgent risks facing patients and staff, not to discredit authorities.
“Sadly, I was given an indefinite suspension… I didn’t know that my goodness would be punishing me so badly,” she said, appealing directly to Nigerians.
The Trigger: A System Under Strain
In her initial video, the nurse described working conditions that many healthcare professionals quietly acknowledge but rarely document publicly: wards without stable power supply, unreliable water access, and the absence of oxygen in critical moments.
Y'all remember the nurses featured in the viral video calling on the Enugu State Government to intervene in the condition of Uwani General Hospital, Enugu, has cried out, alleging that they have been susp£nded by the hospital management.
