Sports Journalist Tells NFF to Sack Super Eagles Coach

The pressure on Eric Chelle is mounting, especially as Nigeria struggles in the CAF World Cup qualifiers. The draw against Zimbabwe at home further fueled doubts about his ability to lead the Super Eagles to success. Mitchell Obi’s comments highlight a broader sentiment among Nigerian football fans who expected immediate improvements under Chelle’s leadership.

Chelle, who previously led Mali to the quarterfinals at AFCON 2023, was seen as a promising appointment when he took over in January. However, his inability to secure a home win in six matches has raised serious concerns. Many fans believe that with Nigeria’s wealth of football talent, the team should be performing much better.

Nigeria currently sits in fourth place in Group C with just seven points from six matches, a position that puts their World Cup qualification hopes in jeopardy. The Super Eagles started their campaign with a win against Rwanda but failed to build momentum, with their latest draw against Zimbabwe being particularly disappointing.

Mitchell Obi’s call for Chelle’s dismissal suggests a preference for a Nigerian coach who understands the country’s football culture and can rally the team effectively. His statement, “It is time to lay our treasures at home,” implies a belief that local coaches may be better suited for the job.
