Ramadan Update- Nigerian Muslim May Fast Another Day As Moon Remains Unseen

The Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), led by His Eminence, the Sultan of Sokoto, Alh. Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, has announced that fasting may continue on Sunday, March 30, 2025, as the crescent moon marking the end of Ramadan has not yet been sighted in Nigeria.

Moon Sighting and Eid Declaration

In a statement signed by NSCIA Secretary-General, Prof. Is-haq Oloyede, the council urged Muslims to look for the crescent of Shawwal on the 29th of Ramadan.

1. If the moon is sighted in accordance with Islamic verification standards, Eid al-Fitr will be on Sunday, March 30.

2. If not, fasting will continue, and Eid will be on Monday, March 31.

Saudi Arabia Confirms Eid for March 30

Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia has officially sighted the moon and announced that Eid al-Fitr will be celebrated on Sunday, March 30, 2025.

This was confirmed on the official Haramain Facebook page, which stated:

“The crescent moon for Shawwal 1446 has been sighted in Saudi Arabia. Eid al-Fitr will be celebrated on Sunday, March 30, 2025.”

To mark the celebration, the Federal Government has declared Monday, March 31, and Tuesday, April 1, as public holidays.

The announcement was made by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, in a statement signed by Permanent Secretary Magdalene Ajani.

Minister Tunji-Ojo congratulated Muslims on completing the holy month of Ramadan and encouraged them to embrace:Self-discipline, Compassion & generosity, Peace & unity

He also called on Nigerians to pray for national peace, stability, and prosperity, urging citizens to celebrate safely and responsibly, while remembering the less privileged through acts of kindness.
