Nigeria has made history as the first country in West Africa to successfully perform robotic prostate cancer surgery. The groundbreaking procedure was carried out at The Prostate Clinic (TPC) in Lagos by Professor Kingsley Ekwueme, a UK-based Consultant Urological/Robotic Surgeon.

A New Era in Prostate Cancer Treatment

TPC is the first specialized centre in West Africa for robotic and laparoscopic surgery. It offers advanced treatments for prostate cancer and other urological diseases.

At the heart of this breakthrough is the Da Vinci robotic surgical system, a high-tech tool that allows surgeons to perform delicate operations with great precision.

Benefits of Robotic Surgery

  1. Minimal pain
  2. Less blood loss
  3. Faster recovery

Patients can go home within 24 hours with small scars and no need for blood transfusions.

Prof. Ekwueme: “This is a Dream Come True”

Prof. Ekwueme shared his excitement:

“With robotic surgery, we can save lives. No one should have to travel abroad for prostate cancer treatment when we now have top-quality care in Nigeria.”

Before now, only South Africa had the Da Vinci system in Africa. Nigeria is now on the global map for robotic-assisted surgery.

Revolutionizing Cancer Treatment in Nigeria

The Da Vinci system provides 3D imaging, giving doctors a clearer view and better control during surgery. This reduces complications and helps patients recover faster.

Affordable & Accessible: Prof. Ekwueme promised that no patient would be turned away due to lack of funds. His goal is to reduce prostate cancer deaths in Nigeria.

More Medical Innovations Coming Soon

Prof. Ekwueme also performs surgeries for: Kidney cancer, Bladder cancer, Benign prostate enlargement. He plans to introduce a non-invasive treatment for enlarged prostates—the first of its kind in Africa.

Ekwueme called on the government and medical institutions to invest in training more surgeons. This will help more Nigerians access advanced medical care.

With this historic surgery, Nigeria is now a leader in medical innovation in West Africa. Thousands of lives will be saved.
