Greek authorities have arrested a 59-year-old man in the port city of Alexandroupolis, accusing him of spying on military supply convoys for Russia.
The suspect, a Greek citizen of Georgian descent, was picked up on Tuesday and appeared before a magistrate on Friday, according to police and local media.
In a statement, police said the man admitted to taking photos and videos of military equipment, acting on behalf of someone else. He reportedly sent the footage through an encrypted app.
A police source told AFP that the man, who claims to be a house painter, had been focusing on military convoys headed to Ukraine. Authorities found footage of these convoys on his phone.
Suspected Ties to Russian Intelligence
Investigators believe the man may have been recruited by Russia’s GRU military intelligence agency, possibly through an intermediary. That go-between is said to be a Georgian national with ties to organized crime, reportedly living in Lithuania.
The suspect also served in the Russian army in his younger years, further raising suspicions about his links to Moscow.
Why Alexandroupolis Matters
Alexandroupolis is a strategic hub for NATO and the U.S. military. The port has played a key role in moving American military supplies into Eastern Europe under a mutual defense agreement.
While Greece has historical ties to Russia, it has supported Ukraine since the start of the war.
This incident comes at a time of heightened tensions and could further strain relations between Russia and the West.
