Vice President Kashim Shettima has departed Abuja for Dakar, Senegal, where he will represent President Bola Tinubu at the country’s 65th Independence Day celebrations on Friday, April 4.
His trip comes as President Tinubu embarks on a short working visit to Paris, France, where he is expected to review his administration’s midterm performance and key milestones. According to presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga, the President will return in about two weeks.
Senegal’s Independence Day marks its freedom from French colonial rule in 1960 and is celebrated with national parades, cultural performances, and public ceremonies.
Vice President Shettima’s presence at the event follows an official invitation from Senegal’s new President, Bassirou Diomaye Faye, and highlights the growing diplomatic ties between Nigeria and Senegal.
The main celebration will take place at Place de la Nation in Dakar, with President Faye hosting dignitaries from across the African continent and beyond.
Shettima is expected to return to Nigeria shortly after the one-day event.
