Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has officially joined TikTok, just days after former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai made his debut on the platform.
Obi announced his arrival via his X (formerly Twitter) handle on Tuesday, sharing a video and urging Nigerians to follow him.
“This is my official and only TikTok page. Kindly join me towards building a new Nigeria that is possible,” he wrote.
The former Anambra State governor’s move to TikTok appears to align with his vision of engaging young Nigerians in his “New Nigeria” campaign.
El-Rufai’s TikTok Takeover
El-Rufai, who joined TikTok last Wednesday, has quickly gained attention. In his announcement video, he encouraged Nigerians to follow him for discussions on politics and his new party, the Social Democratic Party (SDP).
“This is my only and official TikTok page. Please join me for videos, comments, and conversations on Nigerian politics, as well as the activities of our new party, SDP. Welcome on board,” he said.
Within 24 hours, El-Rufai’s account surpassed 200,000 followers, sparking political conversations online. His TikTok bio describes him as an:
“Accidental public servant, certified ruffler of feathers, and deliberate SDP member.”
His move to TikTok comes shortly after his exit from the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Why Are Politicians Moving to TikTok?
The increasing presence of Nigerian politicians on TikTok reflects the growing influence of social media in shaping political discourse, particularly among younger demographics.
With both Obi and El-Rufai now active on the platform, will other political figures follow suit?
