A Life of Consistency and Commitment: Baba Ayo Adebanjo at 90, By Femi Fani-Kayode - Premium Times Opinion

Chief Samuel Ayodele Adebanjo, born on April 10, 1928, in Isanya Ogbo near Ijebu Ode, Ogun State, Nigeria, was a prominent lawyer, nationalist, and influential political figure. He began his political journey in 1943 as a follower of Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe before joining the Action Group in 1951. A close associate and disciple of Chief Obafemi Awolowo, Adebanjo was deeply involved in Nigeria’s fight for independence and the promotion of federalism.

Initially a journalist, Adebanjo later pursued legal studies in the United Kingdom and was called to the English Bar in 1961. Upon returning to Nigeria, he became a key member of the Action Group’s youth wing and served as the party’s organizing secretary. Throughout his career, he was a steadfast advocate for democracy, free elections, and social welfare.

As a founding member and leader of Afenifere, the pan-Yoruba socio-political organization, Adebanjo championed the principles of true federalism and restructuring in Nigeria. His unwavering commitment to these ideals solidified his reputation as a principled and courageous leader.

Chief Ayo Adebanjo passed away peacefully on February 14, 2025, at his residence in Lekki, Lagos, at the age of 96. His death marks the end of a significant chapter in Nigeria’s political history, leaving behind a legacy of dedication to justice, equity, and the betterment of the nation.
