MTN Group and Airtel Africa have signed agreements to share network infrastructure in Uganda and Nigeria, aiming to enhance digital and financial inclusion across the continent.

This collaboration will improve network efficiency, expand coverage, and deliver better mobile services, particularly in rural areas that lack modern connectivity.

Why Network Sharing?

Telecom operators in Africa are witnessing rising demand for data services. By sharing infrastructure, they can: Reduce operational costs, expand network reach, improve service quality, Avoid infrastructure duplication

MTN and Airtel Africa’s Vision

MTN Group’s President & CEO, Ralph Mupita, emphasized the company’s commitment to Africa’s digital progress:

“We continue to invest in coverage and capacity to ensure high-quality connectivity. Network sharing helps drive efficiency and better returns while meeting growing demand.”

Similarly, Airtel Africa’s CEO, Sunil Taldar, highlighted the importance of infrastructure sharing:

“While we compete on brand, services, and offerings, sharing infrastructure within regulatory limits allows us to build a stronger digital highway for financial inclusion.”

The Growing Trend of Network Sharing

Across the globe, telecom operators are collaborating to improve service delivery and reduce costs. Shared networks allow for:

  • Faster, more reliable mobile services

  • Lower investment in physical infrastructure

  • A more competitive telecom market

The partnership will include:

  • RAN sharing (Radio Access Network)

  • Fibre infrastructure collaboration

  • Potential fibre network construction

Maintaining Competition

Despite working together on infrastructure, both companies will remain independent and continue to compete in the market. This agreement does not prevent either company from partnering with other operators in various regions.
