Nigerian singer Fireboy DML, born Adedamola Adefolahan, has opened up about his humble beginnings and the tough road he walked before rising to stardom.
In a recent episode of the 90s Baby Show in London, Fireboy revealed that before signing with YBNL Nation, he was on the verge of becoming a petty trader, despite holding a bachelor’s degree.
“I was considering selling rechargeable lamps,” the ‘Peru’ crooner said. “I met a guy under Ajah Bridge in Lagos who was into the business and I told him I was interested.”
At the time, Fireboy was already selling pepper soup at a local joint to survive, but he admitted the lamp business felt “more dignified.” He added that his parents had no idea he was doing menial jobs just to get by.
From Ajah Bridge to the Global Stage
Just as he was about to enter the world of petty trading, Olamide came calling. The YBNL Nation boss discovered Fireboy and offered him a deal—over WhatsApp.
Fireboy officially signed to YBNL Nation in 2018, and his breakout hit Jealous (from the YBNL Mafia Family album) quickly catapulted him into the spotlight.
A Story of Grit and Grace
His debut album Laughter, Tears and Goosebumps followed in 2019, earning critical acclaim and solidifying his place in the Nigerian music scene. Since then, Fireboy has become a global star, collaborating with international acts and performing on world stages.
“Thank God for that [Olamide signing me],” he said with gratitude, reflecting on the journey.
From almost becoming a roadside trader to topping charts across continents, Fireboy’s story is a powerful reminder of how talent, perseverance, and a little faith can change everything.
