The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has destroyed over N1 trillion worth of fake and dangerous drugs. These drugs were seized from markets in Anambra and Abia States and burned at the Anambra State Waste Management Agency (ASWAMA) dump site in Awka.
Fake Drugs Seized from Aba and Onitsha Markets
According to Dr. Martin Iluyomade, NAFDAC’s Zonal Director of Operations, Southeast, the agency confiscated the drugs from major drug markets in Aba and Onitsha. The operation was part of a one-month crackdown on substandard and falsified medicines.
Key highlights:
- The seized drugs included unregistered, expired, and fake medicines, including Tramadol and Analgin.
- NAFDAC is strengthening regulations and increasing surveillance to stop the spread of fake drugs
- The agency assured Nigerians that all certified medicines are safe and effective.
Public Urged to Report Fake Drug Dealers
NAFDAC is calling on Nigerians to report individuals involved in selling fake drugs. The agency emphasized that eliminating counterfeit medicines requires public support and cooperation.
“We are committed to protecting lives and ensuring Nigerians have access to safe, high-quality medicines,” Iluyomade stated.
