The Federal Government has revealed how it successfully persuaded Bishop Matthew Kukah, the Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, to accept the role of Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council at the newly established Federal University of Applied Sciences, Kachia, Kaduna State.
According to Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, Vice President Kashim Shettima played a pivotal role in nominating and convincing Bishop Kukah to take on the responsibility.
Dr. Alausa shared this insight on Thursday during the inauguration of the university’s Governing Council and Principal Officers at the Ministry’s headquarters in Abuja.
Shettima’s Personal Appeal to Kukah
Speaking at the event, the minister recalled the Vice President’s determination to enlist Bishop Kukah despite knowing how busy he was.
“When the Vice President was nominating Bishop Kukah, he was concerned that he was adding to his responsibilities. But he said, ‘Bishop Kukah has great respect for me. Every time I’ve asked him to serve, he accepts. I will ask him for the sake of the country, and I know he will not say no.’”
True to his expectations, when Shettima reached out, Bishop Kukah accepted the role, demonstrating his unwavering commitment to national service.
Bishop Kukah’s Dedication to Education
Dr. Alausa expressed deep appreciation to Bishop Kukah for accepting the appointment, despite his numerous commitments. He noted that the bishop’s decision reflects his dedication to education and community development.
The event was attended by several dignitaries, including Chief of Defense Staff, General Christopher Musa, and the university’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Qurix Williams Barnabas.
Security Assurances for the University
General Musa, an indigene of Kaduna State from Zangon Kataf Local Government Area, assured that the Nigerian military would provide robust security to ensure a safe learning environment for students and staff.
