As part of World Oral Health Day celebrations, the Nigerian Dental Association (NDA) held an awareness briefing in Abuja, stressing the strong connection between oral hygiene and mental health. The event, themed “A Happy Mouth, A Happy Mind,” took place at the National Hospital Abuja and featured health talks, outreach programs, and stakeholder engagements aimed at boosting oral health awareness nationwide.
The Link Between Oral Health and Mental Well-Being
Speaking at the event, Dr. Badamassi Abba, Director of Clinical Services at the National Hospital, described the mouth as the body’s gateway and emphasized that poor oral health doesn’t just affect physical well-being—it also has psychological effects. He explained that issues like tooth decay, gum disease, and bad breath can lead to social withdrawal and a decline in mental health. “The mind is not healthy when the mouth is neglected,” he stated.
Dr. Theophilus Agho, Chairman of the NDA, outlined key oral hygiene practices, including brushing twice daily, eating a balanced diet, replacing toothbrushes every three months, and scheduling regular dental checkups. He also stressed the impact of food choices on oral health and how problems like bad breath and dental misalignment can affect confidence and social interactions. To address these challenges, the NDA has launched a nationwide awareness campaign targeting schools, markets, and the media.
Calls for More Investment in Oral Healthcare
Dr. Vitalis Obi, Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning, called for increased government investment in oral healthcare. He emphasized the need for better funding, more dental professionals, and stronger public-private partnerships to expand access to quality dental care across Nigeria.
A Reminder to Prioritize Oral Health
The event reinforced the message that maintaining a healthy mouth contributes to overall well-being. Nigerians were encouraged to take proactive steps toward better oral hygiene, as a healthy mouth leads to a happier mind and a better quality of life.
