Nollywood actor Uzor Arukwe has addressed criticism surrounding his role in Omoni Oboli’s new movie, Love In Every Word.
Arukwe plays Odogwu Obiora, a wealthy Igbo man who generously spends on his partner, Chioma (played by Bambam). While many, especially women, praised the character as an ideal partner, some male viewers argued that the movie exaggerated a man’s financial responsibilities in relationships.
An X user, @Himp2million, criticized the portrayal, saying:
“Anambra men are not simps. Your movie is only liked by ladies who fantasize about an odogwu spending his last dime on them.”
Arukwe Defends His Character
In response, Arukwe dismissed the claims, stating that providing for one’s partner doesn’t make a man a ‘simp’ but a responsible person.
“Taking care of your woman and spending money on her doesn’t make you a simp. It only makes you a responsible man,” he wrote. “How else do you show love to your partner if you can’t take care of their needs from the abundance of your wealth?”
This isn’t the first time Arukwe has faced criticism for a movie role. In 2023, he was accused of overexaggerating his Igbo accent in Funke Akindele’s blockbuster A Tribe Called Judah.
Despite the backlash, Love In Every Word continues to spark debate about gender roles and financial expectations in relationships.
