Renowned Nigerian gospel reggae artist Buchi Atuonwu, popularly known as Buchi, has shared a deeply personal story about how he walked away from cultism after a life-changing spiritual experience.
Speaking in a recent interview on Black Flame, the 60-year-old singer revealed that his decision to abandon cult activities came after a spiritual revelation that made him see the group for what it truly was—a spiritual trap, not just a physical association.
“Jesus! I had a deeper understanding. Jesus showed me the meaning of the cult. He showed me it was not a physical association. You can’t bring a knife to a gun war. It was spiritual,” Buchi said.
The Voice That Marked the Turning Point
The Jesus Must Be Honoured singer recalled a chilling moment that marked the beginning of his transformation.
“We were singing and walking when someone spoke into my ears; you don’t belong here. I ignored the voice, but I heard it for the second time. That was when my problems started—running from other cults, from the police, etc.,” he recounted.
Buchi said the mysterious voice haunted him and wouldn’t let go until he made the decision to leave the cult life behind. He eventually surrendered his life to Christ and shifted his focus entirely to gospel music.
A New Life Through Gospel Music
Since then, Buchi has become one of Nigeria’s most respected gospel reggae musicians, known for hit songs such as Mma Mma, It Is Well, and What A Life.
In December 2021, he celebrated 21 years since becoming born again, a milestone he describes as the beginning of a truly meaningful life.
“That encounter changed everything for me. Now, I use my voice to lift others, just as Christ lifted me.”
From cultism to Christ, Buchi’s story continues to inspire many, proving that no one is beyond redemption.
