The Nigerian Senate has officially passed a vote of confidence in Senate President Godswill Akpabio, reinforcing its support for his leadership amid recent controversies. The resolution, led by Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele and passed under Orders 40 and 51, calls for renewed focus on governance and legislative responsibilities.
Presiding over the plenary, Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin urged lawmakers to set aside political distractions and prioritize pressing national concerns, particularly following the passage of the national budget. He emphasized that the core controversy behind recent tensions is now before the courts and should be handled by the legal system.
Addressing public concerns, Senate Leader Bamidele dismissed rumors linking the issue to sexual harassment allegations. He clarified that the disciplinary action taken was purely in response to a breach of Senate rules.
“The matter referred to the Committee on Ethics and Privileges had nothing to do with sexual harassment. The Senate President did not preside over any such case. What was addressed was a flagrant disregard for Senate rules, and we followed due process as guided by the Constitution.” — Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele
He further defended the Senate’s authority to regulate its internal affairs, stating that disciplinary measures, including suspensions, are essential for maintaining order and legislative integrity.
Bamidele also responded to concerns raised by international bodies and civil society organizations, including the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU). He clarified that any remarks made by the senator involved in the controversy at the IPU meeting were personal opinions and did not reflect Nigeria’s official stance.
On civil society concerns, he urged objective analysis and cautioned against conflating political disputes with actual cases of sexual harassment.
“We have heard you, but we need to concentrate on our work. If we choose to be silent on this matter going forward, know that it is intentional. Please be objective in your analysis and reserve energy for those who are genuine victims of sexual harassment.” — Senate Leader Bamidele
With the vote of confidence reaffirming Akpabio’s leadership, the Senate is shifting its attention to critical legislative duties, including:
1. Electoral reforms to strengthen Nigeria’s democratic system
2. Economic recovery policies for national growth
3.Tax reforms for a fair and transparent taxation system
4. Effective oversight of budget implementation
Deputy Senate President Jibrin emphasized that now that the budget is passed, lawmakers must focus on governance and allow legal channels to resolve any remaining disputes.
The Senate’s resolution signals a commitment to stability and national progress, moving past internal conflicts to fulfill its legislative mandate. As Nigeria faces significant economic and political challenges, the role of the Senate in shaping effective policies remains more crucial than ever.
