Real Madrid Signs Liverpool Star Before Contract Ends
Real Madrid have confirmed the signing of Trent Alexander-Arnold from Liverpool. The 26-year-old defender will join the Spanish club on June 1, a full month before his Liverpool contract officially ends.
Although Alexander-Arnold could have joined for free on July 1, Real Madrid paid a fee reported to be between £8 million and £10 million. The early move allows the England international to play in the FIFA Club World Cup, which starts in the United States on June 14.
FIFA has opened a special registration window from June 1–10, making the early transfer possible.
Long-Term Deal Until 2031
Alexander-Arnold has signed a deal that keeps him at Real Madrid until June 2031.
He could make his debut on June 18, when Real Madrid play Al-Hilal of Saudi Arabia in their first Club World Cup match in Miami.
A Legendary Liverpool Career Ends
Alexander-Arnold leaves Liverpool after making 352 appearances for the club. He came through Liverpool’s academy and became one of the Premier League’s top right-backs.
With Liverpool, he won:
-
The Champions League in 2019
-
The Premier League in 2020
-
Another Premier League title in 2024
Despite his success, some fans were upset about his early exit. He was even booed during Liverpool’s second-to-last game of the season. But after support from Jürgen Klopp and Mohamed Salah, fans cheered him during the title celebration at Anfield.
Real Madrid Looks to Rebuild
Alexander-Arnold joins a Real Madrid side that failed to win a major trophy this season. The team has struggled at right-back due to injuries. Dani Carvajal missed time with a knee problem, and Lucas Vázquez was forced to fill in out of position.
New manager Xabi Alonso, also a former Liverpool star, is rebuilding the squad. Real Madrid have also signed Dean Huijsen, a Spanish centre-back from Bournemouth.
What Alexander-Arnold Brings
While he has faced criticism for his defending, Alexander-Arnold is known for his:
-
Passing range
-
Vision
-
Attacking runs on the right flank
Real Madrid hope he brings creativity and consistency to a defense hit by injuries last season.
