Nigeria’s defensive line may soon get a major upgrade as Hamdi Akujobi, a standout right-back in the Eredivisie, has declared his commitment to play for the Super Eagles. The 25-year-old Almere City defender revealed in a recent interview that it has always been his dream to represent Nigeria at the senior level.
The former Nigeria U20 invitee, who narrowly missed out on the 2019 FIFA U20 World Cup, told EagleTracker that his improved performances over the years now make him a stronger contender for the national team. Since joining Almere City in 2022, Akujobi has made 79 appearances and scored 6 goals, becoming one of the most consistent full-backs in the Dutch top flight.
“From 2019 till now, I’ve grown a lot. I think I’m ready to give my best for the Super Eagles,” Akujobi stated. “Wearing the Nigerian emblem is something I’ve always wanted. I am ready to give my body and soul to the team.”
Chelle’s Europe Tour Paying Off
The news comes as Eric Chelle, the Malian-born Super Eagles coach, continues a productive scouting tour across Europe. Backed by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Chelle has been actively engaging foreign-born talents eligible to play for Nigeria, aiming to bolster the squad ahead of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers in September.
Nigeria will play a series of friendly matches in May and June, which could serve as the perfect stage for new call-ups like Akujobi to make their mark. With the Super Eagles currently struggling in CAF Group C with just one win from six games, fresh defensive options could be key to turning their campaign around.
