Violence broke out Wednesday night in the Fagge area of Kano State after tensions between football fans boiled over following the outcome of the UEFA Champions League quarterfinal match between Real Madrid and Arsenal.
The unrest was reportedly triggered by Real Madrid’s 1-2 loss to Arsenal, which sealed a 5-1 aggregate victory for the Gunners and sent them to their first Champions League semi-final in 16 years. What began as celebration quickly turned violent, as jubilant Arsenal fans clashed with furious Real Madrid supporters in the streets.
From Celebration to Chaos
A viral video shared on Facebook by user Mustapha Muhd Gujba Banker captured the intense altercation. In the clip, young men—identified as fans of both clubs—were seen throwing punches, hurling stones, and exchanging heated insults as the situation spiraled out of control.
According to the video caption, the chaos erupted shortly after the final whistle, when what began as harmless taunting escalated into an all-out brawl.
As of Thursday morning, the Kano State Police Command had not issued any official statement regarding the incident. It remains unclear if any arrests were made or if anyone sustained serious injuries.
Incidents like this highlight the passionate—sometimes extreme—football culture in parts of Nigeria, where matches between top European clubs can stir strong emotions.
