A man identified only as Peter has been killed by a mob in Lushi, a suburb on the outskirts of Bauchi metropolis, over allegations of stealing a dog.
According to reports, another suspect, Dokagk Danlami, aged 38, who was allegedly involved in the act, was severely beaten and is currently receiving treatment at the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital (ATBUTH) after slipping into a coma.
Police Confirm Incident, Launch Investigation
The Spokesperson of the Bauchi State Police Command, CSP Ahmed Wakil, confirmed the incident on Thursday, noting that Danlami suffered serious head injuries, while Peter was confirmed dead by medical personnel at the scene.
“Peter, whose surname is yet to be identified, was found at the scene and regrettably declared dead by medical personnel,” Wakil stated.
The police said an investigation is underway to identify and bring to justice all those involved in the mob action.
Commissioner Condemns Mob Justice
The Commissioner of Police, CP Sani-Omolori Aliyu, has condemned the act, describing it as barbaric and a violation of Nigeria’s legal framework.
“No individual possesses the authority to treat a suspect in such a brutal manner,” the commissioner said.
“It is erroneous for anyone to assume the role of law enforcement.”
He stressed that suspects should be handed over to the police or other appropriate authorities for proper investigation and prosecution, warning that mob justice will not be tolerated under his leadership.
