Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle is actively seeking to bolster Nigeria’s national team by recruiting young talents, including Arsenal’s promising midfielder Ethan Nwaneri. Born in London to Nigerian parents, the 17-year-old Nwaneri has represented England at various youth levels, making him eligible to switch allegiance to Nigeria.
Reports suggest that Chelle plans to meet with Nwaneri in London to discuss the possibility of him joining the Super Eagles. A source close to the coach stated, “Chelle will meet with Nwaneri in London this week. I am optimistic that he will see the reason that he has more prospects of playing for the Super Eagles than the Three Lions.”
Nwaneri’s family appears open to this opportunity. UK-based Nigerian journalist Shina Oludare reported that a family source indicated the youngster would honor whichever country—Nigeria or England—approaches him first.
In addition to Nwaneri, Chelle is considering other young talents to rejuvenate the Super Eagles. This includes players like George Ilenikhena (18, striker, AS Monaco), Victor Udoh (19, winger, Southampton), and Ahmed Abdullahi (20, striker, Sunderland).
The push for fresh talent comes after Nigeria’s recent 1-1 draw against Zimbabwe in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, a result that left the Super Eagles in a challenging position within their group.
Securing Nwaneri’s commitment could provide a significant boost to Nigeria’s midfield, offering creativity and youthful energy as the team strives for future success.
