A Nigerian woman and mother, Progress Okuk, has questioned why younger widowed women are allowed to stay unmarried.
She stated that it is not good for a woman to raise her kids alone till old age.
She however added that if a widow chooses not to remarry, it should come from personal conviction and not societal expectations.
“I use to question why widowed younger women were allowed to stay unmarried. I didn’t think it was a good thing that a woman who lost her husband in her 30’s would not seek to remarry; choosing instead to raise her children alone till old age,” she wrote in a Facebook post on Friday.
But I have also come to realize that there are certain bonds between a man and woman, that can’t be explained; even in death.
There is how a man would love a woman, that it becomes humanly impossible for any other man to fill the void, whether after a breakup or in his demise.
She imagines it a desecration, opening her body to another man; consequently, she simply locks up, for fear of mediocrity or simply in honor of what they shared. There are indeed different levels to this thing called “love”.
Even though I respect her choice, I still do NOT accept the idea that a young widow, with children, would remain unmarried after the demise of her husband.
This should come from a personal conviction and not societal expectations.
It is NOT good for ‘man’ to be alone. ”
