The Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, announced on Tuesday, November 5, the removal of the 18-year minimum age requirement for university admission in Nigeria. During his inaugural ministerial briefing in Abuja, Alausa revealed plans to potentially review Nigeria’s education policy to address current challenges and improve educational outcomes.
Additionally, Alausa confirmed that the Federal Government will uphold its recent decision to nullify over 22,700 degrees earned from unaccredited “fake” universities in neighboring countries, such as Togo and Benin Republic, as part of efforts to protect the integrity of Nigerian qualifications.
Emphasizing a shift toward practical education, the Minister highlighted the need for Nigerian tertiary institutions to prioritize job-ready skills to tackle the country’s unemployment crisis rather than simply increasing graduate numbers.
