A Vice Principal at Complete Child Development College in Akure, Ondo State, was brutally attacked after preventing a student from cheating during the ongoing West African Examination Council (WAEC) exams.
Mr. Rotifa, the school’s Vice Principal, was reportedly beaten by suspected thugs said to have been hired by the student’s family. The shocking incident has sparked outrage and raised concerns about the safety of teachers and exam officials.
What Happened?
According to an early report by the Ondo State Ministry of Education, the incident began on May 26 when Mr. Rotifa discovered an Android phone with an SS3 student during a WAEC exam—an action that violates school and exam regulations. He confiscated the phone as expected.
Days later, the student’s mother showed up at the school, causing a scene and demanding the phone be returned. The school’s proprietor eventually gave in and handed the phone back to her.
But the situation escalated further.
The student’s older brother, a former student of the school, later came to threaten Mr. Rotifa, vowing to “deal with him.” That same day, a group of boys was spotted loitering near the school premises after hours.
Attack on the Way to Police Station
Fearing for Mr. Rotifa’s safety, the school’s proprietor instructed him to report the threats to the police. He did, and two officers escorted him in their van to locate the suspects. They couldn’t find them.
Shockingly, on the way back, the group of boys allegedly waylaid the police van, dragged Mr. Rotifa out, and assaulted him in front of the officers.
He was immediately taken to the hospital and has since been discharged, though he is reportedly too afraid to return home.
Government Response
The Ondo State Ministry of Education has launched an investigation, and efforts are underway to identify and arrest those responsible. Authorities say steps are being taken to ensure the safety of school staff and students for the remainder of the WASSCE exam period.
