Tragedy struck in Ibadan on Tuesday when 14-year-old Kehinde Paul Alade was hit and killed by a stray police bullet in the Alakia area. His father, Odunayo Alade, who was driving Kehinde and his brother to school at the time, is now demanding justice for his son’s death.
Speaking to reporters, Mr. Alade pushed back hard against police claims that they suspected a kidnapping.
“I’m not a kidnapper,” he said. “I was shocked when I heard the police say that. I was simply taking my children to school.”
The Oyo State Police Command initially said that officers believed a crime or abduction might have been in progress. But many are questioning that explanation, including friends of the family.
Dr. Oluwamayowa Oke, a medical doctor and close family friend, visited the Alade home and called out what he described as yet another example of police brutality. He urged the Nigeria Police Force to do better in protecting—not harming—citizens.
In response to growing public outrage, the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has ordered a full investigation. According to Force spokesperson ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the officer involved has already been taken into custody.
“This is a tragic situation,” Adejobi said. “The Inspector-General has directed a thorough and transparent investigation. The findings will be made public, and we are committed to ensuring that justice is served. Our thoughts are with the family.”
The Oyo State government has also commented on the case, saying Mr. Alade was allegedly driving against traffic when the shooting happened—a detail that has added even more controversy to the incident.
As the investigation unfolds, the family and community continue to mourn a young life lost far too soon.
