In a major policy shift, the Federal Government of Nigeria has designated the Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Airport, located in Minna, Niger State, as the official alternative to Abuja’s Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport.
The announcement was made by the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, during the launch of commercial flight operations by Overland Airways from the airport.
“This facility has everything; an international-grade runway, strategic location, and the ambience to handle large-scale aviation traffic,” Keyamo said.
“A Boeing 747 or a triple seven can land here without issue. The fact that this airport has remained underutilised for so long is baffling.”
The airport, situated about 150 kilometres from Abuja, was formerly known as Abubakar Imam International Airport before being renamed in March 2024 in honour of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as part of a national initiative to recognize notable Nigerians.
Keyamo directed the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) and the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) to immediately begin coordination and preparations for the airport’s new status.
This strategic move is expected to relieve congestion at Abuja’s international airport, especially during periods of maintenance or high traffic, while also boosting economic activity in the North-Central region.
“Our vision is to create a robust, resilient, and regionally balanced aviation system,” the minister added.
“Minna is now officially part of that future.”
Overland Airways became the first commercial airline to operate from the upgraded Minna airport, marking a new chapter for the aviation hub. Observers see this as part of a broader push by the Tinubu administration to decentralise aviation infrastructure and improve regional connectivity.
The federal government is also expected to invest in further developing the airport, including:
1. Advanced navigation systems
2. Expanded passenger terminals
3. Cargo handling facilities
4. Attraction of international carriers and cargo operators
The airport’s new designation is not only a boost for the aviation sector but also positions Minna as a growing logistics and trade hub in the region.
