President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has extended heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and fans of Nigerian football icon Christian Chukwu, who passed away on Saturday at the age of 74.
In a statement issued by his spokesperson Bayo Onanuga, the President joined the sporting community in mourning the loss of a national treasure whose legacy in Nigerian football is both historic and enduring.
“Christian Chukwu was more than a footballer and coach. He was a symbol of excellence and patriotism,” President Tinubu said. “He brought joy to millions, mentored a generation of footballers, and stood as a pillar of Nigerian brand and sportsmanship on and off the pitch.”
A Towering Legacy
Nicknamed “Chairman” for his commanding presence and leadership, Chukwu captained Nigeria’s national team, the Green Eagles, to a historic Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) victory in 1980. He later returned to the national team as head coach, leading the Super Eagles to a bronze medal finish at the 2004 AFCON.
Chukwu was also a legend at club level, spending his entire playing career at Enugu Rangers, where he led the team to multiple domestic championships and a memorable continental title in 1977—the African Cup Winners’ Cup.
National Honor and Tribute
President Tinubu praised Chukwu’s discipline, commitment, and deep love for country, describing his career as “trailblazing” and “defined by national pride.”
“His legacies will continue to live on in the trophies he won, the lives he touched, and the exciting moments he provided to football fans and spectators on the field and in the technical area. We are forever grateful for his contributions to the sport we all love,” the President stated.
The President also offered prayers for the repose of Chukwu’s soul and comfort for his loved ones, encouraging them to find solace in the immense impact he had on Nigerian football and national pride.
