The Presidency has responded strongly to Senator Ali Ndume’s recent criticism of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s appointments, describing the senator’s comments as “hypocritical” and “divisive.”
Senator Ndume, who represents Borno South, had alleged during an appearance on Arise TV’s Prime Time programme that Tinubu’s political appointments violate Section 14(3) of the Nigerian Constitution, which mandates equitable representation of all regions in federal appointments.
“The figures are there. You can look at the figures… It’s a constitutional provision. Section 14(3) of the constitution is very, very clear,” Ndume stated, warning that such perceived imbalances could “boomerang” if not addressed.
The Presidency Responds
In a statement titled “A Response to Ali Ndume”, Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, countered the senator’s claims via his X (formerly Twitter) handle on Tuesday.
Onanuga accused Ndume of selective outrage, pointing out that two of his kinsmen from Borno South—Ndume’s own district—were recently appointed to top positions in NNPC Limited by President Tinubu.
“If Tinubu’s appointments were truly tribal or lopsided, how did two of Ndume’s kinsmen land top NNPC roles?” Onanuga asked.
He described the senator’s remarks as “headline-chasing” and “rhetoric-driven,” adding that Ndume often ignores facts in favour of sensationalism.
“Ndume has proven time and time again that he is allergic to facts and addicted to theatrics,” he said.
Merit Over Politics
Onanuga reaffirmed the President’s commitment to merit-based and inclusive appointments, emphasizing that decisions are made based on competence, integrity, and national spread.
“President Tinubu is building a government that embraces all Nigerians… His appointments are based on merit and national interest—not Ndume’s cherry-picked tribal arithmetic,” Onanuga stated.
He urged Senator Ndume to “elevate public discourse” and avoid spreading misinformation that could fuel division.
“This is a disservice to the nation and the behaviour least expected from a Nigerian Senator,” he added.
