Chief Maja Umeh, a former Commissioner for Information, Culture, and Tourism in Anambra State during the administration of Peter Obi, has passed away.
Umeh died on Wednesday, April 9, 2025, at the Emergency Ward of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu Teaching Hospital (COOUTH), Amaku-Awka.
Born on October 7, 1960, Umeh was 64 years old, just a few months shy of his 65th birthday.
Confirming the news in a statement, the current Commissioner for Information, Dr. Law Mefor, described Umeh as a committed public servant whose impact on the state was deeply felt.
“Chief Umeh’s contributions to Anambra State’s growth and development in his time were profound. His legacies serve as a reminder of the power of dedicated public service and community engagement,” Mefor stated.
Following the news of his passing, several associates and loved ones have visited the hospital to pay their respects, including Prof. Ken Nwogu, husband to the state’s Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, and the Governor of Anambra State, Prof. Chukwuma Charles Soludo.
Chief Umeh was widely known for his articulate communication style, cultural advocacy, and unwavering dedication to public enlightenment during his tenure in office.
He leaves behind a legacy of service, humility, and commitment to the development of Anambra State.
