Glovo, the multi-category app, has teamed up with She Code Africa and the Lagos State Government to launch the first-ever Women in Tech Bootcamp, empowering 100 women with tech skills and real-world experience.
Organised in collaboration with the Lagos State Ministry of Commerce, Cooperatives, Trade and Investment, led by Folashade Ambrose-Medebem, and the Ministry of Science and Technology, the 12-week programme concluded with a graduation ceremony in March—marking Women’s Month with the global theme “Accelerate Action.”
Building Tech Careers, One Woman at a Time
The bootcamp offered training in Frontend Development, Backend Development, and Mobile Development, while also equipping participants with career coaching, soft skills workshops, and hands-on capstone projects. This comprehensive approach ensured graduates left with both technical know-how and the confidence to launch careers in tech.
Championing Diversity and Inclusion
Lamide Akinola, General Manager of Glovo Nigeria, described the initiative as just the beginning of a long-term commitment to empowering women in STEM:
“We are proud to champion diversity, and this initiative is one of many to come as we continue to accelerate action towards gender equity in STEM,” she said.
Omotola Spence, Expansion Manager at Glovo Nigeria, added that the program demonstrates the company’s commitment to fostering inclusivity and equality in the tech space.
Capstone Competition: Real-World Impact
A key moment during the graduation was the Capstone Project showcase, where top teams presented innovative tech solutions tackling issues like financial literacy, food waste, and academic productivity.
The winning team in the Backend and Frontend category was Group 1, led by Linda Gift Awo and Abisola Odusanwo, alongside teammates Aminat Ismaila, Adebisi Adesanya, Nafisat Akokhia, and Elizabeth Gabriel.
Reflecting on the journey, Awo and Odusanwo shared:
“We not only gained backend development skills, but also learned the power of collaboration and problem-solving. Winning the capstone challenge gave us the confidence to chase impactful careers in tech.”
This bootcamp stands as a bold step forward in Nigeria’s journey to close the gender gap in tech and shows what’s possible when government, private sector, and community organisations work together to build a more inclusive future.
