A suspected jihadist attack in eastern Burkina Faso has left several dozen soldiers and civilian auxiliaries dead, local and security sources confirmed on Sunday.
The attack occurred on Friday in Tapoa province, where an army detachment from the city of Diapaga was targeted in what one security source described as a “violent assault.”
Both regular army personnel and civilian volunteers were among the casualties, with several others wounded.
Burkina Faso has been grappling with escalating jihadist violence in recent years, as militant groups linked to Al-Qaeda and ISIS continue to launch deadly assaults across the region.
More details are expected as authorities assess the full scale of the attack.
