Tragedy struck in Calabar, Cross River State, when a police officer, reportedly suffering from mental instability, went on a shooting spree, killing three people.
The incident occurred at the Atakpaa Division police station, near the busy Watt Market. Witnesses reported that the officer had been displaying signs of distress before suddenly opening fire, causing chaos and panic. His colleagues, caught off guard, fled the scene, with some scaling the fence into the nearby Yoruba Line section of the market.
Eyewitnesses described how he initially fired shots into the air before stepping onto the road and shooting indiscriminately, hitting three unsuspecting victims.
Following the attack, fear and confusion gripped the Watt Market area. Traders abandoned their stalls, while others gathered in shock, discussing the horrifying events.
Confirming the incident, police spokesperson SP Irene Ugbo stated: “The officer had just returned from duty when he suddenly began acting irrationally, firing shots and warning people to stay away. Unfortunately, three people were hit—one woman lost her life, while two others remain in critical condition. The officer has since been arrested and is in custody.”
Authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident to prevent a recurrence and ensure public safety.
