The Borno State Police Command has arrested a couple, Muhammad Shetima (33) and Aishatu Abubakar (23), for brutally assaulting an 11-year-old girl, Hauwa Mohammed Goni, in the Pompomari area of Maiduguri.
According to state police spokesperson, Nahum Kenneth Daso, the primary 5 pupil of Bolori Primary School, Federal Low Cost, had entered Shetima’s residence to pluck mangoes when she was accosted and severely beaten by the couple.
Couple Filmed Assault and Shared on Social Media
During the incident, Mrs. Aishatu Abubakar recorded the assault and shared the video on social media, sparking public outrage.
“Concerned citizens and civil society organizations, including a petition filed by Potential Attorneys, swiftly raised the alarm, leading to the couple’s arrest,” Daso stated.
The suspects were arrested with the help of concerned citizens and operatives of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Borno State Command.
The couple is currently being held at the Gender Unit of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Maiduguri, as investigations continue before their prosecution.
Meanwhile, the victim has been taken to the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH) for medical treatment and is responding well to care.
The Borno State Police Command has assured the public that the case will be thoroughly investigated, and the suspects will be prosecuted under relevant sections of the Child Protection Law and the Borno
State Penal Code Law.
